would a 100-120v transformer be enough or will it work in the first place anyways?

Japan works on 100V at 50Hz where the US uses 115V at 60Hz. It will not work for long. You will eventually burn out the components. If you are using something in Japan (from the US or vice-versa) and are afraid that you may damage it, then you need to get a transformer…then you should have no problems. Had to use them before.

I bought a Panasonic Japanese bread machine at a goodwill store. It was 100v. It worked fix for 6 months and then needed to be rewired. Easy to do on a breadmaker. Not so easy on all electronics.
