PMIC Offers Free ICD-10 Coding Materials with 2013 Product Announcement

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) February 24, 2012

The health care industry has been preparing for the scheduled October 1, 2013 conversion from ICD-9 to the ICD-10 coding system for several years. However, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) recently announced a delay in the scheduled implementation, creating uncertainty among health care providers, hospitals, and payers with regard to training for the new ICD-10 coding system.

To help customers prepare for the conversion PMIC has created a series of products that include free ICD-10 coding products in e-Book formats. All print versions of the PMIC ICD-9-CM 2013 editions will include both ICD-9 and ICD-10 e-Books at no charge. In addition, PMIC has created a comprehensive series of low cost ICD-10 coding products including coding books, e-Books, mapping books, and data files, all priced significantly lower than competitors.

Physicians, hospitals, insurance companies and other health care professionals who are not ready to invest in ICD-10 products will receive free copies of the ICD-10 e-Books with the purchase of ICD-9 products. In addition, PMIC is offering discounts up to 50% to customers who purchase ICD-10 products at the same time they purchase ICD-9 products.

Background

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, commonly referred to as HIPAA, mandates the use of standardized code sets for electronic health care transactions, including processing of health insurance claims. The International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, known as ICD-10, is one of the code sets mandated by the HIPAA regulations.

This is a major change that will require modification of all software programs which process health insurance transactions, the maintaining of dual coding systems for continuity of care, extensive revision of policies and procedures regarding medical coding, and the training of millions of health care personnel. A study co-sponsored by the American Medical Association (AMA), the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) and others estimated the conversion cost to be about $ 23,000 per physician. This amount excludes the potential losses incurred due to delayed or denied claims resulting from the incorrect use of the new coding system.

About PMIC

Practice Management Information Corporation (PMIC), founded in 1986, is the nation’s leading independent publisher of medical coding and compliance resources with a reputation for delivering choice, quality, service and value to its health care customers. PMIC has a reputation for creative solutions to its customers needs for accurate, current and complete information delivered in easy to use formats.

PMIC is the majority owner of Medical Coding & Compliance Solutions, llc (MCCS), which offers electronic coding solutions including Flash Code® (http://flashcode.com) and is a co-sponsor of http://icd9coding.com, the #1 diagnosis coding website on the internet.

Form 1099-K User Interface

Melville, NY (PRWEB) February 22, 2012

A transportation company that receives proceeds of credit card transactions from its bank, on behalf of its independent contractor drivers who accept credit card payments, and then distributes the proceeds to the driver, must issue a Form 1099-K to each driver reporting the gross proceeds. Additionally, the transportation company must report all 1099-K forms to the IRS either electronically or on IRS approved 1099-K forms, the former being mandatory if 250 or more returns are to be reported.

Integrated Data Management Systems, Inc. (IDMS), a leading provider of W-2 and 1099 software, has made it a priority to include electronic reporting (eFile) and plain paper filing of Form 1099-K in its latest release of Account Ability Tax Form Preparation software. Jeff Goldstein, IDMS’s president, also added “In an effort to avoid penalties pursuant to IRC §6721 and §6722, Account Ability also includes free Bulk Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) Matching for recipients of Form 1099-K”.

In an effort to minimize the learning curve, IDMS provides free unlimited toll free support to all of its users. The phone has a few decent features although is priced well in the market place, 2mpix camera, HSDPA running maximum 7.2Mbs, GPS and Geo Tagging and all other ideas Samsung throws into the mix these days. Rumour has it that can run Ice Cream Sandwich so we need now wait. Thicker than some of the other new phones that are out in the market and although not a real small screen sometimes it does seem to struggle. Quad Band GSM and 3g so all good. Center for Internet Security Recognizes Data Privacy Day on January 28

East Greenbush, N.Y. (PRWEB) January 26, 2012

In support of Data Privacy Day, the Center for Internet Security (CIS), a national not-for-profit focused on enhancing the cyber security readiness and response of public and private sector entities, today issued tips to help users protect themselves and their information online. Data Privacy Day, coordinated and led by the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), is an annual international awareness initiative focused on educating people about the importance of protecting personal information and promoting education about good privacy practices.

A Facebook Live launch of Data Privacy Day will be held Thursday, January 26, 9:00-11:45am ET. The event will feature U.S. Federal Trade Commissioner Julie Brill along with several well-known industry privacy leaders discussing the intersection of privacy and security.

In 2011, more than 26 million records containing sensitive personal information were involved in a data breach as a result of hacking, malware, or lost, stolen or improperly discarded equipment, according to the national Privacy Rights Clearinghouse. The Ponemon Institute reports that the average cost of a data breach for an organization is $ 7.2 million. Javelin Strategy & Research estimates the average out-of-pocket cost for an individual who is a victim of identity theft is $ 631.

“The volume of information collected, maintained and transferred online is tremendous. It’s important for each of us to think through our online interactions, whether at home, school or work. When it comes to sharing personal information online, less is better. The less you share, the more you can protect your privacy and minimize the chances of becoming a victim,” said William Pelgrin, CIS President and CEO. “In addition to limiting the amount of personal data you share, there are many other steps you can take to help protect your information and privacy. We’re pleased to collaborate with the National Cyber Security Alliance in putting a spotlight on the importance of privacy protections.”

“The success of Data Privacy Day depends on the efforts of many individuals and organizations interested in the ways personal information is collected, stored, used and shared,” said NCSA Executive Director Michael Kaiser. “We’re pleased to collaborate with the Center for Internet Security in helping to raise awareness and educate users.”

The Center for Internet Security offers the following tips for users to help secure their transactions and protect the privacy of their information:

Secure your computer. Be sure to have a firewall installed and enabled on your computer. Use anti-spyware/anti-adware protection software. This software is designed to protect you against spyware or malware, which can extract private information from your computer without your knowledge. Make sure you keep these programs updated.

Check your browser settings. Periodically check your Internet browser settings (e.g. Security and Privacy) to ensure that the settings are adequate for your level and type of Internet activity.

Use encryption. Use encryption software if you store private data on your laptop or other portable electronic devices. This will help protect your private data in the event the device is lost or stolen.

Review privacy policies. Be sure to read the privacy statement on websites you are visiting prior to providing any personal information, to understand that entity’s policy regarding protection of data.

Understand if and how location data is used. Check if GPS location data is being stored when you upload pictures to your social media site from your mobile device and disable it if you don’t want the world to know exactly where the picture was taken.

Secure your online transaction. Guard the security of your transactions when shopping online by ensuring the transaction is submitted securely. When submitting your purchase information, look for the “lock” icon on the browser’s status bar to be sure your information is secure during transmission. Also be sure “https” appears in the website’s address bar before making an online purchase. The “s” stands for “secure” and indicates that communication with the webpage is encrypted.

Use strong passwords on all your accounts. Use a minimum of eight characters and a mix of special symbols, letters and numbers. Use separate passwords for each account.

Trust but verify. Always question someone who is asking you to reveal any personally identifiable information. Find out how it will be used and whether it will be shared with others.

For more resources about online security, visit the Center for Internet Security.

Fly Away Technologies LLC is proud to introduce: “FUF” (rhymes with “rough”), the world’s first practical electronic fly repeller designed to protect open food & drinks! Flies eat from and walk on vile, disgusting things & then they want to land on your food. Yuck! There’s a health danger too: in 2010, the CDC estimated that 148 million Americans, or 1 in 6 people, come down with food poisoning every year with an estimated 3000 annual deaths from various vectors. We designed & built a safe, affordable product to help reduce stress and food poisoning due to flies contaminating food by repelling them away from items placed just underneath it. {Note: The CDC & US FDA does NOT approve or endorse the preceding statement.} “FUFs” or FUFs are eye and finger safe. They’re built with high quality electronics & powered by a rechargeable high quality Redilast Lithium Ion Battery good for hundreds of charges. FUFs work best with buffet style setups where foods of similar height are grouped together. However, placed strategically, they can also be used where people eat and drink. Parents can safely place them near where their children eat outdoors, since most kids tend to be inattentive to flies and that whole “germ theory” thing. Microflies & heavy fly swarms may require placing the soft propellors vertically closer to unattended open food or drinks. Please handwash or use antiseptic wipes on FUF propellors before & after use. Fly disease facts from: “Biology Teaching Resources. The

Will European Electronics work in the US?

Question by Kevin W: Will European Electronics work in the US?
I have been living in Europe for the last several years and have loads of electronics that were bought here…..

TV, X-Box, Wii, Electric Toothbursh, vacuum cleaners, etc, etc, etc….

I’m now moving back to the US and want to know if these will work there or not.

I know I can buy step down converters that drop the European 220 V down to 110, but will these electronics that are made for 220V work if they are plugged into a 110 socket?

Best answer:

Answer by TV guy
Anything with video will have a very hard time, unless you keep your PAL TV for your xbox and wii. If your TV is not multi-standard, it will not work in the US with US set-top boxes or antenna.

Small electronics probably have 110-240V power adapters so you just need plastic power adaptors so they can fit the US outlets.

For the rest, you need transformers, big enough to support their wattage.

With the introduction of buffer underrun protection, I decided to buy my first CD recorder in February of 2002. The Philips PCRW1610 is one of the early drives equipped with such a technology and, as the name implies, can record CD-Rs and -RWs with speeds of up to 16x and 10x respectively. Although a more conservatively styled OEM drive (CDD4911) utilizing the same internals was also manufactured, retail models in Philips’ contemporary line-up are distinctive compared to the average appearance of optical disk drives – with the drawback that it could prevent the front door of some computer cases from closing properly. Today, the company still offers DVD recorders sourced from the Philips & Lite-On Digital Solutions Corporation (PLDS) joint venture, but the likely identical Lite-On products appear to have a larger presence on the market.

LA Re.Play: An Exhibition of Mobile Media Art

LA Re.Play: An Exhibition of Mobile Media Art

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) February 21, 2012

A dozen international media artists bring the dynamic field of mobile art to LA Re.Play: An Exhibition of Mobile Media Art at the DESMA Grad Art Gallery, Broad Arts Center at UCLA, and the L.A. Convention Center February 22 through 26, 2012.

The exhibition and companion lectures and events explore how smartphones, GPS, networks, location-based games, situated video and sound engage mobile technologies to transform our sense of past and present, near and far.

“Art that integrates mobile phones, networks, and geo-located audio/visual media reveals how new ‘mixed reality’ experiences allow participants to explore a different sense of place” says co-curator Mimi Sheller. “We are inspired to slow down, to sense and make sense of the city spaces that we move through every day.”

Artists and collaboratives include the Electronic Disturbance Theater/b.a.n.g. lab, Ecoarttech, Manifest.AR and en route/Past City Future, among others. Experiences available include mobile hikes, performances, mobile augmented reality, receptions and in-gallery documentation of works that have been created around the world.

Co-curator Hana Iverson says what the artists do is take everyday technologies to explore urban landscapes and create participatory art experiences. “This is not art as ‘rarified object located in an elite institution’” she says. “This is public art, accessible in the context and sequence of our everyday lives.  But it is invisible, ephemeral and magical.”

The exhibition, sponsored by the Center for Mobilities Research and Policy at Drexel University and co-curated by Sheller, Iverson and Los Angeles based artist Jeremy Hight is presented at these different venues and on the street.

Larson Electronics’ Magnalight.com Announces Addition of 150KA Power Transformer Substation

This portable transformer is ideal for operators who need to tap into and utilize 480VAC power sources outside of the work area.

Kemp, TX (PRWEB) February 21, 2012

The MGS-150KVA-480-10X100A power transformer substation allows operators to tap into 480V three phase power sources and step this current down to useable 120/208Y output for powering a wide variety of tools and equipment including electric motors which require linear output and computers or lighting which require non-linear current. The 208Y output on this portable transformer/distribution system is a standard neutral WYE configuration which gives the unit added versatility and functionality. This portable transformer is ideal for operators who need to tap into and utilize 480VAC power sources outside of the work area such as when working with new building construction or performing plant turnarounds. The MGS-150KVA-480-10X100A is designed for use with three phase 480 VAC which it steps down to 120 and 240 VAC and distributes via included receptacles. This portable power transformer distributes 120VAC single phase through four GFI protected receptacles and 208Y via ten 100 amp ADR1044 outlets, providing operators with multiple connection capability from a single unit. The transformer on this unit is configured to be NEMA 3r compliant, and safe connection to 480 VAC is provided through a 400 amp fused ON/OFF main disconnect switch. Further protection is provided by ten 100 amp 3 phase breakers on the 208Y side and four 20 amp breakers on the 120VAC side. A heavy duty 2” square steel tube cage equipped with a single centrally located lifting eyelet and rectangular integral skid pockets provides a rugged platform for the transformer and control box assembly and allows operators to easily load, unload, and transport the unit from one location to another using forklifts or cranes. This portable power distribution system is ideal for operators who require the ability to power not only the equipment and motors common to work sites, but the lighting and computers often used in portable offices and management buildings as well. These portable substations are also popular on jobsites where hazardous location and explosion proof lighting and equipment are used due to their high reliability and multiple output configurations.

“The MGS-150KVA-480-10X100A power distribution substation is designed to distribute three phase power for both motor and lighting loads, making it extremely versatile.” said Rob Bresnahan from Larson Electronics’ Magnalight.com. “These power distribution substations are ideal for taking three phase power and giving operators outlets for single phase grinders, pumps and lighting. We can customize the outlet configuration, transformer type and size and panel configuration based on the needs of the customers working in the oil fields, working on plant turnarounds, bridges, etc.”

Larson Electronics’ Magnalight.com is a manufacturer and carries a large inventory of power distribution substations, solar powered generators, inline transformers, hazardous location lights, intrinsically safe lights and explosion proof fans. Magnalight maintains custom design capability and can configure power substations and transformers according to customer requirements. Question by Southsider: Are GFCI outlet’s o.k. for electronics like Xbox / laptops, etc ? what are the risks?
Realized that we’ve been using some 3 prong outlets that are not grounded; live in an old house and not financially ready to re-wire. (fairly certain with other history of electricity in the house that re-wiring is ultimately needed) – Before calling in an electrician, curious if we go the GFCI route – can those outlets be used for electronics without damaging the equipment? I heard GFCI proptects the person using it .. and trying to see if it offers other protection too – thanks

They’re just a regular electrical outlet, but have a built-in circuit breaker like the type you see in the bathroom or around the kitchen sink. It’s added protection in case you come in contact with something dangerous, like a bad connection in an appliance. As far as for electronics, better to go with surge protectors, etc.

Be Prepared This Small Business Tax Season with Five Tips from BizFilings

Karen Kobelski, general manager of BizFilings

Madison, WI (PRWEB) February 21, 2012

For small business owners, even thinking about tax season may bring up feelings of anxiety. However, small businesses have many tax options and deductions available to them — and the sooner planning for taxes start, the better off entrepreneurs will be. BizFilings, a leader in online incorporation and a supporter of small businesses, offers these five tips for maximizing your deductions and making filing taxes more of a cakewalk than a headache:

1. Get organized! In the hectic life as a small business owner, taxes can seem foreign and daunting. Take steps now to get ahead, organizing your receipts, records and tax documents. Be sure to save all information you receive in the mail — such as 1099 forms, W-2s and other documents of interest. Organization can be key when asking a tax professional to help file your tax return, as he or she will be better able to define relevant deductions.

Getting home office deductions organized is also important around this time of year. Home office space that’s used strictly for business (no personal use allowed) can allow entrepreneurs to deduct rent, utilities, improvements to the home, and more for this designated area — but there are strict requirements. It’s important to know the exact square footage of the space used as a home office, as well as the total square footage of a home. A tax official can help determine the tax deductible amount of expenses based on these facts. For more information on what can and can’t be deducted, use the Home Office Deduction Tool.

2. Make sure you’re filling out the right forms. Filing taxes isn’t a one-size-fits-all opportunity. Different business formations, accordingly, will file tax documents unique to their entity type. For example, a 1040 individual income tax return must be filed by an LLC, a C corporation or an S corporation but each of those business entity types require additional distinct forms to be filed. . BizFilings has created a business type tax comparison chart to detail which forms are required for which formations, as well as the different benefits and considerations that each business formation provides.

“It’s true that there are many different tax advantages to different business structures,” says Karen Kobelski, vice president, small business sales, service & digital marketing of BizFilings. “What’s important for entrepreneurs is to form the business entity that will serve them best — both at tax time and beyond.”

3. Stay on top of the tax updates that impact your business. This year, the IRS is introducing the 1099K, a form that documents the gross amounts businesses paid by credit card, electronic transfer or via online merchants like PayPal. These forms will be sent in the mail to appropriate businesses, but entrepreneurs who don’t receive the form may want to check with the IRS and determine if the 1099K is needed. For more updates and changes, entrepreneurs can visit the IRS’ website.

4. Increase contributions when possible. Though the calendar says 2012, there are still actions that can be taken to impact 2011’s taxes. Small business owners who haven’t already done so can still consider contributing to an IRA (either traditional or Roth). Contributing to a traditional IRA can lower your taxes, and the contribution in the retirement account will compound tax-free. The maximum IRA contribution for 2011 is $ 5,000.

5. Use a professional to make sure you receive all the benefits and deductions that you deserve. Above and beyond these tips, there are often deductions that are easily overlooked — like business gifts, office supplies, parking, postage, and even taxi fares. To learn more about maximizing your tax deductions, visit the BizFilings small business resources learning center. The Learning Center has information about deductions and credits, as well as tax benefits exclusive to corporations. It also may be best to consult an accountant who is familiar with small business taxes and can help you get the most out of your tax return.
